The history

One of the most important city-states in the ancient times, a dominant power in shipping, trade and agriculture, but also with important colonies in the Aegean and Southern Italy, Eretria is a piece of history, which one encounters in important monuments, such as the archaeological park, the acropolis, the theater as well as in the valuable findings of its Archaeological Museum.

It was destroyed twice, by the Persians and the Romans, while from the 3rd century AD it was gradually abandoned. The most modern city was built only in the 19th century, to accommodate refugees, after the destruction of Chios and Psara by the Ottomans. The modern city was called, in fact, "Nea Psara", until 1960, when it took back its old name.

The etymology of the name Eretria has two directions: from the ancient verb ερέσσω (i.e. to row) or a corruption of the word αρότρια (from the agricultural plow).
